Building a Vibrant Online Community
Together with the Starlight Foundation, we reimagined and revitalised the Livewire Online community, creating a space where young people can connect, share, and support one another.
Overview
Livewire is a service dedicated to supporting teenagers living with a serious illness, disability, or chronic health condition, as well as their siblings, across Australia and New Zealand. The Livewire program, operating both in-hospital and through an online platform, provides a positive environment where users can grow, build their identity, and foster a sense of belonging.
The Brief
Updated Branding
An exciting brand refresh for Livewire was in progress, bringing a revitalised look and feel to the style guide that would be seamlessly adapted to the web. This update not only elevated the brand’s online presence but also opened opportunities to enhance the core user experience. Each element was carefully re-examined, refined, and thoroughly user-tested to ensure that every solution was tailored to meet the unique needs of Livewire’s audience, creating a more engaging and intuitive experience across the site.
New Community Platform
The original site operated on a platform that limited its growth and potential, creating a fantastic opportunity for transformation. While migrating to a new platform was a substantial endeavour, it opened the door to integrating cutting-edge tools and features that fully align with Livewire's high standards in security, accessibility, and functionality. BuddyBoss was carefully tuned to meet these benchmarks, ensuring secure, seamless data connectivity with Livewire’s CRM and setting the stage for enhanced user experiences right from the start.
The Solution
UX Design
Creating a warm, friendly, and on-brand design was essential to crafting a welcoming space where young people could easily connect and support each other. Our UX approach focused on seamlessly integrating features like instant messaging and live streaming, enabling a variety of interactions that met the expectations of a young audience. This ensured that members could navigate the site effortlessly, engaging in meaningful ways that fit their needs, and making the platform a go-to place for connection and community.
Technology
Integrating Comet Chat and live streaming with Vimeo was pivotal in building a vibrant, live community experience, enabling users to connect seamlessly during their favourite livestreams. The site’s custom-developed post management system also balanced public engagement with privacy, allowing administrators to curate and share selected content while safeguarding members personal information. This innovative system ensured that only intended information reached the public, creating a dynamic yet secure online space for the Livewire community.
The Results
The site launch was met with enthusiastic praise from the community! Young users loved the enhanced features in instant chat and livestream systems, which made connecting and engaging easier than ever. Additionally, the new preview options allowed public visitors to explore and experience the site’s offerings before gaining full access, giving them a welcoming first look into the community they were joining.
